Alteration of conventional notion of Rationality and Science in Catholic Modernism (exemplified by concept of Havryil Kostelnyk)
Abstract
The article highlights the figure of the Ukrainian philosopher and theologian Havryil Kostelnyk as a representative of Catholic Modernism. The controversial nature of Kostelnyk’s views on science and rationality is analyzed. Kostelnyk evinced skepticism towards conventional Catholic metaphysics (Thomism) with its high standards of rationality. In case of Kostelnyk the expressive manifestation of modernist “irrationalism” was the excessive focus on the psychology of religious life. Kostelnyk eventually not only rejected traditional metaphysics, but questioned the objective nature of dogmas. At the same time, by rejecting the traditional Thomistic rationality, Kostelnyk remained dependent on secular thinking based on the principles of secular rationality
